5. The care by your
treatment team
After surgery, you will be transferred to the intensive care unit or intermediate care (IMC), where you will spend at least the first night and be monitored around the clock using modern technology. Provided your health is stable, you will be transferred to a ward the following day, where you will be treated as part of an ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) programme.
Your nursing and medical team
You will be assigned a nurse for your stay who will be responsible for you and your care process. After the operation, you will be introduced to the responsible nurse. The nursing staff will draw up a nursing process for you and discuss the daily organisation of your day with you. The nursing process is then evaluated and adapted on a regular basis.
In order to optimally develop the individual care process and the daily planning with you, it is important that you communicate your needs and concerns to the responsible nursing specialist or your primary caregiver.
You will receive daily visits from Prof. Z'graggen and his surgical team. In addition, a doctor from General Internal Medicine will look after you throughout your stay. For your comprehensive treatment, your nurse practitioner is in close contact with you and the rest of the team.
Physiotherapy from the first day
Already on the first post-operative day, a physiotherapist will visit you to continue with respiratory therapy. He will show you individually adapted exercises and instructions. In the acute phase, the exercises will be carried out daily with you in order to lead you back to complete independence.
Psychological support
A few days after the operation, you will be visited by the psychologist in your room to discuss your condition, any stresses or concerns. Together we will discuss further support, if necessary with the involvement of relatives. If necessary, the psychologist can also be consulted at any time during the subsequent course of treatment via the treatment specialists of the institute.
If the stress continues and if desired, outpatient psychotherapeutic/psychooncological treatment can be offered after the patient leaves the hospital.
Nutrition and diabetes counselling
Your nutritionist will look after you individually to ensure an optimal diet after the operation. At the same time, we advise you on all aspects of nutrition after pancreas surgery for the time at home.
The pancreas produces the hormone insulin to regulate the blood sugar balance (glucose balance). Depending on the extent of the pancreas operation, it may be necessary to regulate the blood sugar balance. If this is the case, you will be accompanied by a diabetes specialist.
In the event of a subsequent rehabilitation stay
In the course of your inpatient stay, we will discuss with you whether you can be discharged directly home from a medical point of view. If this is not possible, your attending doctor will recommend a rehabilitation stay. The social counselling service will support you in choosing the follow-up institution that is suitable for you by providing information about the range of services. The social counselling service will take care of the entire registration process for you.
Gladly here for you!
